Mary McCormick 75, of Laurinburg, died Friday, October 12., at Scottish Pines. Funeral Service will be held 1:00 PM Saturday, October 20, 2018, at First Church of Christ, Laurinburg, North Carolina. Viewing and Visitation will be held from 3:00 until 6:00 p.m. at Purcell Funeral Home on Friday, October 19, 2018. Services are entrusted to Purcell Funeral Home, Laurinburg.
Mrs. Mary Helen Campbell McMillan McCormick, age 75, took God’s hand when she heard Him call on Friday, October 12, 2018.
Mary Helen was born September 3, 1943, in Hamlet, NC to the late Alphonzo and Martha Campbell. She attended Laurinburg Institute, R.B. Dean and Proctorville High Schools. After her school years, Mary Helen worked various domestic jobs and later retired from Toastmaster, Inc. At an early age Mary Helen, attended New Hope Baptist Church in Fairmont, NC. In 1974 she joined First Church of Christ Disciples of Christ in Laurinburg, NC, where she was a faithful worker in the church serving positions as Missionary President, Sunday-school teacher, Mother of the Church, choir member and member of the Helping Hand Club. Mary Helen was the biological mother of three, but a community mother to many. She was known throughout the county for her made from scratch cakes.
Mary Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Hezekiah McCormick, daughter, Martha Ray Campbell, two brothers, Coldon Campbell, and Rev. Bennie J. Dunlap.
Mary Helen leaves to cherish her memories: one son, Verdell (Doretha) McMillan of Laurinburg, NC; one daughter, Erica McMillan of the home; goddaughter, Thomasina Austin of Knightdale, NC; godson, Charles McLaurin of San Antonio, TX; five children by marriage, Charles (Diane) McIntyre of Laurinburg, NC, Calvin (Alfie) McIntyre of Chester Virginia, Delois McInnis of Winston Salem, NC, and Yolanda Shaw of Weymouth, MA; three sisters, Mary Lee McQueen of Spring Lake, NC, Earlene McLeod of Laurinburg, NC, and Geraldine (Rev. James) Clark of Laurinburg, NC; three brothers, Roy (Diane) Dunlap of New York, NY, Frank Mitchell (Leona) of Rockingham, NC, and Linwood Dunlap of Monroe, NC; three sisters-in-law, Elizabeth (Hubert) McRae, Madgalene (Cleatis) Ratcliff all of Laurinburg, NC, and Hattie McCormick of Lumberton, NC; twenty-one grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
